Our School Proclamation
POBLACHT NA SCOILE SEO, THE WHOLE COMMUNITY OF ST COLMAN'S B.N.S..
TO ALL THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND, Irishmen, Irishwomen and Irish children.
In the name of God, on this day we remember the dead generations of out Irish nation who gave us our rich culture and identity. We commemorate in a special way all those who lost their lives in the 1916 rising. They fought in full confidence of victory and yes they won for us, eventually, our right to national freedom and sovereignty. We are thankful to them for the peace and independence we enjoy today. We, the children, staff and wider community, are more than happy to celebrate, commemorate and share stories of 1916.
We are grateful to live in a country where we can go about our daily lives in a peaceful environment. However we are mindful of those who live in war-torn countries. We hope to see and contribute towards world peace in our lifetimes.
We must think of better strategies to help the homeless, the poor and also the refugees who come to our country. In St Colman's B.N.S. we feel that the government needs to consider supporting smaller communities, empowering them to reach out and help those in need. Derelict buildings could be revamped. Our caring small communities should be better equipped to share their local resources with others.
We believe that our government must be open and honest, elected by the people and therefore work for the people. They must learn from their own mistakes in the past and from the mistakes of other government members.
We are proud to live in a country of equal opportunity. Religion, skin-colour, race, language or wealth does not set us apart. We are to be judged by the choices we make and by the content of our character.
We are all now educated towards caring for our environment. We are conscious of our responsibility to safeguard it and protect it for future generations. We fly our green school flags with pride.
We are conscious of the need to regenerate a greater respect for human life. A human life is irreplaceable. Every week we hear news of gangland killings, shootings and murder. This needs to stop.
We need to continue being kind to animals. We need them and they need us. It's a symbiotic relationship. One of our most important systems is our healthcare system.
"Is fearr an tsláinte ná na táinte." Our health is our wealth. We need to work harder towards a goal of top class healthcare for all our citizens, young and old alike. When a person is sick they are most vulnerable and deserve dignity and respect.
We need to value and create employment in our own country. Working abroad may be exciting and adventuresome when it is by choice. However there is nothing exciting about forced emigration due to unemployment. It wasn't exciting during the famine and it is not exciting today!
We must cherish and nurture our education system. The original proclamation mentioned the children of the nation. Today we must also pursue their happiness and prosperity. Children are the future. As current pupils of St Colman's B.N.S. we have all grown and developed in our understanding and knowledge of 1916. In time we will share this experience with our children.
As a nation we have become very aware of the importance of looking after our mental and physical health. We hope to continue this by asking the county councils to develop even more opportunities to exercise, more cycle paths and footpaths on our local roads to make it safer for everybody to travel.
We do not know what the future holds in store for us. Technological advances are taking us swiftly into the unknown. It has been said that 60% of the jobs for today's first class do not exist today in practice. But people will remain the same. Let us not forget that. "Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine!"
We place our proclamation under the most high Gods. We give thanks to God for being here today. We pledge our support to this proclamation.
