Recently, as a class, we have read the fantastic, imaginative book, Night Zookeeper and the Spying Giraffes. It was a fictional book about Tom Rivers, the new Night Zookeeper, venturing through the Night Zoo, with assistance from some loyal allies to battle the Voids and the atrocious, malevolent Lord of Nulth.

The book starts off by introducing Tom and Grandma Rivers. If Grandma Rivers hadn’t told Tom about the Night Zoo and about her being a Night Zookeeper, Tom would have never become one in the first place. As part of a school project, Tom draws an elephant onto one of the Zoo walls, yet being creative, he paints it purple. Mysteriously, the elephant comes to life, revealing herself to be the Time-Travelling Elephant. Tom is brought into the world of Night, where he learns that anything is possible and everything is about creativity. Tom joins forces with Sam the Spying Giraffe, an enthusiastic, hyperactive character, eager to help, and Ick, a squirrel equipped with Nulth Armour, a tough, clever figure. Towards the end of the story, the Voids attack. But with the assistance of his faithful, determined allies, and using all of imagination and creativity, he leads his team to victory. This book is a terrific influence for children to embrace their creative side and remember that in your imagination and the Night Zoo, anything is possible. Overall, I would have to say that, this book is a must read and a great example of encouraging imagination.
