Europe Day
5th Class had an eventful but fun-filled day celebrating Europe Day on Friday.
It started with an hour long visit from TD, Michael Moynihan. It was like an episode of The Week in Politics! The boys asked hard-hitting questions relating to the EU, war in Ukraine, climate change, agriculture as well as local concerns re infrastructure and housing. Michael was a good sport and kindly took part in a game of “Who am I?” in relation to countries in the EU. I might add he performed excellently!
This was followed by a visit from two parents, one parent representing Lithuania and the other, Slovakia. Both parents spoke about the differences and similarities between Ireland and their home countries. Again, the pupils were afforded the opportunity of asking both parents questions relating to the historical, geographical and cultural aspects of both EU countries. The pupils were also taught how to say hello and goodbye in Lithuanian and in Slovak.
5th Class were also privileged to welcome Eilish Finngean and Paudie Burke, both of whom gave us an insight into Education in Ireland in the past. They spoke about their favourite things about Ireland and some EU countries that they have visited. The children continued their interviewing skills with these two speakers and it turned out to be a very entertaining session!
We celebrated all the European countries associated with 5th Class and their families. The boys brought in some delicious foods associated with their country. We were all lucky enough to get a taste of Polish, Slovakian and Irish foods. In addition, children danced, sang and played some traditional Irish music. The boys brought in many items for Show and Tell; flags, hurleys, sliotars, instruments, dancing shoes, helmets from world war and trophies. They also dressed in the colours of their European country.
This Wednesday, 5th class are joining in on a Zoom call with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. There are over 460 schools around Europe taking part in this call with only 15 questions from pupils. Luckily, one child from 5th Class was selected to ask the President a question. Well done to Gavin Higgins. His question is as follows: “How is the War in Ukraine affecting your job?”
