Sept 1st 1715 : The "Sun King" (King Louis XIV of France) died. He had ruled since the age of five and was succeeded by his 5-year-old great-grandson Louis XV.
Sept 1st 1830 : Dublin Zoo opened
Sept 1st 1939 : Hitler invaded Poland starting World War 1
Sept 2nd 1666 : The Great Fire of London began in a bakery in Pudding Lane near the Tower. Over the next three days more than 13,000 houses were destroyed, although only six lives were believed lost.
Sept 2nd 1923 : 1st elections in IRISH FREE STATE after gaining Independence from Britain.
Sept 3rd 1939 : Great Britain & France declared war on Germany.
Sept 5th 1997 : Mother Teresa died in Calcutta at age 87, after a life of good works spent aiding the sick and poor in India through her Missionaries of Charity order.
Sept 6th 1813 - Isaac Butt, barrister, politician and founder of the Home Rule movement, was born in Glenfin, Co. Donegal.
Sept 6th 1831 - Birth in Rosscarbery, Co. Cork of Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa, one of the founders of the Fenian Brotherhood.
Sept 7th 1695 - Penal Laws were passed which restrict the rights of Catholics to have an education, to bear arms, or to possess a horse worth more than five pounds.
Sept 8th 1933 - Founding of Fine Gael Party.
Sept 10th -1985 - The first heart transplant took place in Ireland.
Sept 11th 2001 :The worst terrorist attack in U.S. history occurred as four large passenger jets were hijacked then crashed, killing nearly 3,000 persons.
Sept 13th 1916 : Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, South Wales.
Sept 14th 1607 - Hugh O'Neill, Ruari O'Donnell and other chiefs of their families depart Lough Swilly for the continent in what has become known as the 'Flight of the Earls".

Sept 15th 1905 - Pat O'Callaghan, physician, hammer-thrower and first man to win an Olympic gold medal while representing Ireland, is born near Kanturk, Co. Cork
