We had a great time at the Awards Ceremony last Thursday. Brian and Eoin were great ambassadors for our school. Well done boys.
Once again last Thursday we made the Headlines in the Kanturk News Section of our Local Paper The Corkman. It wrote " Boys take steps on greener path. St Colman's earn First Green Flag." Well done to everyone that helped us on our way! The rest of the report can be read below. St. Colman’s Boys are the ‘Wise Men’
The cheering raised the rafters in St. Colman’s B.N.S. Kanturk last week as the much anticipated news arrived. The staff and boys of Kanturk had been awarded their first Green Flag. The work carried out by the Green Schools Committee commenced early last year and a whole school effort ensued. With talks of a brand new school on the pipeline nothing radical was executed but many small changes turned our school inside out. We have many photos of ‘before’ and ‘after’ situations. All our actions were sanctioned by school principal Mrs Eilish Finnegan. As part of their presentation to the Green Schools Inspector the boys sang a song which the committee had penned; ‘We are the wise men Working together for our first Green Flag We are the Wise man And together we’re not bad! All would agree that the boys of St. Colman’s B.N.S. are a credit to their parents and teachers. This experience has changed the way they think. They are currently pooling ideas about how to celebrate the special occasion of raising their first Green Flag. A great day is being planned to celebrate this very worthwhile experience. ‘Coiscéim dearfach ar an mbóthar atá romhainn’ or positive footsteps ahead for everybody in St. Colmans. We will keep you posted!! Congratulations to all on a job well done. Yesterday we received great news in the post. Green Schools Ireland and an Taisce are very impressed with the good work we are doing at Recycling and Managing our Litter & Waste and have granted us our First Green Flag. The Awards Ceremony will be held in May. Well done to all!

Our Green Codes are :
If you want to win Use the Recycling Bin. Kanturk is Green so keep it Clean. The World will be bitter if you litter. If you are clean - the world will be green. Get off the couch, turn off the computer Clean up now to make a brighter future. Don't be mean - stay clean and go green. The winners Jack Quirke, Keelan Culloty, Colin Walsh, Aidan Carroll and Jack Murphy were rewarded with a trip to the Sweet Shop. Mrs Stack and her boys have planted bulbs in the Window Boxes in the Front of the School. We look forward to seeing them in the Spring.
We have applied for our First Green Flag on Thursday 29th of November. Hopefully we will be granted our Flag later on in the School Year. It is very important now for us to keep up the great work we are doing in relation to Recycling and Litter Management.
As a result of concerns from our Green School's Committee our School Yard was powerwashed over the Hallowe'en Break. We are grateful to those from the IRD Duhallow for helping us to make our school yard a clean and pleasant place tp play in.
