Today we are learning about the Lusitania. Thanks to Mr Russell's Class, Cloghans Hill NS & Castledrum NS for sharing links & websites with us.
On 7 May 1915, the RMS Lusitania, en route from New York to Liverpool, was struck by a German torpedo, 12 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale.
World War I was happening when Lusitania was struck by a torpedo from a German submarine that was lurking nearby.
The ship began listing badly which made it difficult to launch the lifeboats.
Captain Turner tried to beach the ship. Lusitania sank beneath the waves in just 18 minutes.
The speed of the sinking meant 1,198 people lost their lives.
The news of the sinking and the circumstances shocked the world and eventually drew America into World War I.
Lusitania now sits in 300ft of water off the coast of Co. Cork. There has never been a full exploration of the wreck.
