New Wave Mental Maths : Wednesday Week 34 & Problem
Side A = Radius x 2
2.5 x 2=
Area of an irregular shape. First I must divide my shape into 2 rectangles / squares. Then find the area of each one. ( Length x Width) And finally add the two answers.
Today week we are going to concentrate on Adding & Subtracting of Fractions with unlike denominators - K15, K16 & K17
You may need a pen and paper here.
Please NOTE: You need to simplify your answers or they will be marked wrong. Also you NEED to a have a space between the whole numbers and the fractions.
K.15 Add mixed numbers with unlike denominators
K.16 Subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators
K.17 Add and subtract mixed numbers: word problems
We have done these before - so this is just a reminder.
Example of Addition
5 1/10 + 8 1/2
I cannot not add these fractions unless I find the common denominator. ( A number both bottom numbers will go into.)
Change everything to tenths.
8 ½ = 8 5/10 ( Method: Divide by the bottom - multiply by the top. 2 into 10 goes 5 times- 5 x 1 = 5)
5 1/10 + 8 5/10 =
(Add the whole numbers. Add the fractions.)
13 6/10 = 13 ⅗
(It MUST be simplified.
What number goes into the top and bottom evenly. 2 . 2 into 6 goes 3. 2 into 10 goes 5.
6/10 = ⅗)
Example of Subtraction
9 ⅓ - 3 1/9
I cannot not subtract these fractions unless I find the common denominator. ( A number both bottom numbers will go into.)
Change everything to ninths.
1/3= 3/9( Method: Divide by the bottom - multiply by the top. 3 into 9 goes three times - 3 x 1 = 3)
9 3/9 - 3 1/9 =6 2/9
Again please try and spend at least 30 minutes a day on these. Try and get a SMART Score of 100 out of 100 ...or as near as you can to it!
