Our Reading Initiative

9/10/2012

During the last year the Government and the Department of Education and Science has stated that the improvement of Numeracy and Literacy skills in Irish schools is seen as being vital.  We are very fortunate that the vast majority of our pupils are performing above the national average in both literacy and numeracy.  We will endeavour to maintain this high standard.   In line with D.E.S. regulations our school is developing a 3 year plan to further enhance the numeracy and literacy skills of our pupils.

At the moment we are focusing on reading

·        Every child gets a library book and card each week.  We ask you to listen to your child reading aloud and question them on the content to ascertain their level of comprehension.

·        Each child will read class novels throughout the year.

·        Children will be encouraged to read extra material from class libraries.

·        We hope to organise a paired reading/buddy system between classes i.e. 6th class reading with 2nd.

·        We will use continuous standardised and class based assessments in the classroom to highlight your childs' strengths and weaknesses.

·        We will introduce a DEAR time in school (Drop Everything And Read) to promote a love of reading.

·        As a parent you could -

(I)      Let your child join the local library.
(II)      Encourage your child to read a chapter before bedtime.
(III)     Read to your child as much as you can - offering to kick start the book by reading the first few pages.

We thank you for your continued co-operation.
