This week we are focusing on Visualising & Interpreting Relationships between patterns and Graphing Points.
Well done to all our boys who took part in the Credit Union Quiz last night. One of our U11 Teams came 2nd & one of our U13 Teams came 3rd. Well done again! All your hard work paid off! St Colman's is very proud of you all.
Best of Luck to our 4 Credit Union Teams who will be representing the school tonight in the Edel Quin Hall at 8pm.
We have 2 U13 teams from 6th Class. They are Alex, Conor, Matas & David G in Team 1 and David H, Niall, Cyruz & Keeelanin Team 2. We also have two U11 teams from 4th & 5th. They are Liam, Kallum, Kayden & Gary in Team 1 and Ciaran, Brian, Jack and Paul in Team 2. Yesterday we celebrated Grandparent's Day. We had a Thanksgiving Mass first and afterwards the parents and grandparents were invited to the Convent Primary School for a cuppa. We were delighted to see such a huge turnout and it was great to talk to so many of you. The boys were very proud to see their Grandparent's out in such numbers. Thank You for your continued support!
Congratulations to Kyle in 3rd Class whose Limerick won 1st Prize in his category in a recent Cork County Library Competition. Well done Kyle. We are all very proud of you here in St Colman's. There was a strange animal from Cork, As you know we at St. Colman’s are taking part in the Green School’s initiative and we are actively working towards achieving our second green flag on the theme of Energy. This is a two year programme and we are now in the final stages before submitting our application form.
A committee was elected, energy sherrifs appointed and our energy code devised. We continue to promote recycling from stage 1 so recycling continues on a daily basis. Paper, pencil parings and batteries are recycled regularly. Thanks to parents who have sent in their Christmas card pictures for recycling. Our used clothing collection was also a great success. On the 3rd of December, Colette Creedon from Cork County Council visited our school, talked with the children and played the “Energy game” with all classes. She was very impressed with the knowledge the boys had on all aspects of energy and energy conservation. On display all over the school are the boys energy posters reminding all to conserve energy at every opportunity. The boys, guided by our energy sherrifs are encouraged daily to check their classrooms and make sure all efforts are made in our quest to save energy. A suggestion box is on display inside the main school door and we continue to welcome any ideas any parent or child has to help us save energy. Our thanks to 6th class who completed our energy questionnaire before Christmas. We hope parents found the enrgy saving tips useful. This week to raise awareness, we are holding two contrasting days. This morning,Tuesday, the meter will be read. Then the school community will operate as usual, plugging in and using the whiteboards, laptops, ipads, photocopier etc as usual. At hometime the meter will be rechecked and the usage recorded. On Wednesday, we are having a LOW energy day. No electrical appliances will be used. Our electrical usage for the two days will be compared and hopefully a huge difference will be observed. Please note our heating system will be running on both days. We will continue to inform you of our targets as we work towards achieving the Energy flag. Yesterday Mr John Murphy, Principal of Coláiste Treasa spoke to 5th & 6th Class and invited them to their Open Night on Thursday next, 29th of January @7.30pm.
Yesterday we were proud and honoured to have had a visit from the BT Young Scientists of the Year 2015. Ian & Eimear from Coláiste Treasa spoke to us about their winning project on Alcohol : Does the apple fall far the tree? They found out that parents drinking and attitude to alcohol had a huge influence on teenagers.
This week we had a mixed bag of weather. We went from the wonderful glistening snow of Wednesday morning to howling winds and raging storms throughout Wednesday night. Much to the disappointment of many of our pupils, our school remained open. Just a note to parents -Safety always comes first. Only travel if and when you feel safe to do so. It's alright to drop children into school late on these occasions.
Last week the Junior Entrepreneur Programme was launched in 6th Class with all children taking part. First of all they discussed what an entrepreneur was? They did mini projects on famous entrepreneurs like Mark Zuckerberg & Simon Cowell. They listed what characteristics & skills would be necessary to be a successful entrepreneur and finally they listed and discussed ideas for a class project. Next week they will be presenting 5 of these ideas to 3 "Dragons" whom we hope will give them advice on how to make their ideas profitable! Watch this space for more news on JEP. They also have their own page for JEP.
