KANTURK CASTLE
Kanturk Castle was built in approximately 1601. Our class went on 4/4/14.
MacDonagh McCarthy considered his castle not only a castle but his home. Its sole purpose was to defend against and attack English settlers. The privy Council in London told him not to complete this castle. This made MacDonagh extremely angry and he broke the blue ceramic tiles for the roof into a river, which is where we get the name Bluepool.
Kanturk Castle is considered a mix of a Tudor house and a native Tower house.
It is four storeys tall. It is twenty –eight metres long and eleven metres wide.
MacDonagh had taken out a mortgage for his castle and for funding rebellions in the area. He was not able to pay back this mortgage to Sir Philip Percival and so Percival took his castle and land for his family until 1900 when the English National Trust took it over. In the year 2000 President Mary McAleese took the deeds on behalf of the Irish People. An Taisce then took over the castle in the parish of Dromtarrife.

KANTURK CASTLE
On the fourth of April 2014 Fifth class of St.Colman’s BNS went on a history trip to Kanturk castle.
Kanturk castle is not actually a castle. It was originally built to be a house. It was built approximately four hundred years ago in 1601 and it is in Dromtariffe parish .
McDonagh McCarthy was the man who wanted to build Kanturk castle as a house. He could not afford to build it so he borrowed some money from Sir Phillip Percival. Unfortunately he could not pay him back. After that the Privy Council came and told McDonagh McCarthy that he could not carry on building it because they thought he would become too strong and that he might attack English settlers.
McDonagh McCarthy was so mad that he threw all the blue ceramic tiles into the river next to the castle and that’s where we get the name Bluepool.
Sadly the castle was never completed. In the year 2000 Presidant Mary Mc Aleese got the deeds back. Now An Taisce own the castle and take good care of it. Hope you enjoyed.
THE END.

Kanturk Castle
On the fourth of April 2014 Fifth class went to visit Kanturk Castle.
It was actually built in Dromtarriffe in 1601. It was first a house built by MacDonagh. He built it for defence against English settlers.
It was a mix of a Tudor mansion and a native Tower house. It is four storeys high, twenty-eight metres high.
It was never finished because the Privy Council London wouldn’t let him finish. It’s said that MacDonagh McCarthy got so angry that he threw blue ceramic tiles into the water. That is how Bluepool got its name.
Sir Philip Percival, the man who gave MacDonagh the money for rebellions and the upkeep of the castle, didn’t get money back from MacDonagh so he got the land and the castle. It was in the Percival family up to 1900.
In 2000 president McAleese took the deeds on behalf of the Irish. An Taisce is now looking after the castle.
