It was the 22nd of May 1943, the middle of WW2 . Jessica and Fletcher were stuck in a small seaside cottage with a grouchy old man . The cottage was old and run down and was in the middle of nowhere . Jessica and Fletcher were originally from Manchester but were immediately evacuated when the war began . The man they lived with was called Mr Stevens but they called him Mr Grouch . He used to be in the military in WW1 but was now too old to fight.
When they first arrived they were astounded at the wonderful view of the huge waves crashing against the rock . There was an old cottage near the village and that's where they were heading . "Mr Stevens, we're going out, " Jessica shouted . "Alright try to be back before dark, " he called back . They both darted out the door and down the blackberry-filled lane . Then they arrived at the cottage . The thatch roof was old and grimy . The windows were smashed and the walls were mossy. " I don't think we should go in there, " Jessica mumbled nervously. "It's fine," Fletcher said confidently . As the two strolled through the brambles they made it to the door . Suddenly they saw Mr Stevens behind them . Busted .
"Don't ever go to that house, it's horrendously dangerous," he said calmly . "Sorry," the two said in unison . Then they marched up the stairs to their room . As they were going up Jessica glanced to the shelf and saw a beautifully engraved oak box . "I think it's a toy box, " Fletcher said excitedly . "At least we will have something to do, " Jessica whispered .
As they gently creaked open the box a bright golden light shone from it . The children stood up frightened , awestruck and amazed . Fletcher put his hands into the box. Suddenly the door burst open. "Don't open the box !"
